India's latest batting sensation Virat Kohli on Thursday said Sachin Tendulkar deserves country's highest civilian award - the Bharat Ratna.
"He (Tendulkar) really deserves Bharat Ratna. Whatever he has done, I don't think anyone else can be even be close to achieve (100 hundreds in international cricket) what he achieved in last 22 years ... it is something impossible," Kohli told reporters, after signing as Brand Ambassador to Toyota Kirloskar Motor.

The demands for the award have found a vocal support across all sections of the society, both national and international.
Excited about this year's IPL, Kohli said unlike last IPL, he is pretty relaxed during this edition with string of good performances behind him in the international arena.
"I am really excited about this year's IPL. I am feeling relaxed this time around because in last IPL, I wanted to prove a point. IPL 3 was not that great performance wise," he said.
Kohli said though he considered himself to be in the confidence zone, he was not complacent and working hard to help RCB's prospects.
"We (RCB) have 18 games to go. It is going to be a challenge for everyone ... I am looking forward for each and every game ... I don't think about the past or think too much ahead of the future," he said.
Earlier, Toyota Kirloskar Motor announced Kohli as its brand ambassador.

Mumbai Indians thrash Chennai Super Kings by 8 wickets
Richard Levi smashed 35-ball fifty to help Mumbai Indians thump defending champions Chennai Super Kings by 8 wickets in the opening match of the fifth edition of the Indian Premier League at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.
Chasing a modest 113-run target, Levi put on 69 runs for the opening wicket with Sachin Tendulkar (16 retired hurt) to set up the run chase perfectly for the Mumbai.
James Franklin (25 not out) and Ambati Rayudu (18 not out) finished off the chase with 19 balls to spare as Mumbai started their new campaign on the right note.
Mumbai's only worry will be Sachin's injury as the master blaster left the field with an injured finger as Chennai bounced back with two quick Mumbai Indians wickets but it turned out to be too little too late.
Tendulkar smashed a six and a four in his 15-ball knock before a bouncer from Bollinger hit him on the glove.
Doug Bollinger dismissed Rohit Sharma (0) in the ninth over to reduce Mumbai to 70/2.
Mumbai lost Richard Levi (50) after he added quick 69 runs with Tendulkar. Dwayne Bravo ended Levi's whirlwind innings, after the batsman slammed three sixes and six boundaries in his 34-ball half century.
Tendulkar and Levi started Mumbai Indians run chase aggressively as they raced to fifty in just six overs.
Electing to field, discipline Mumbai bowlers bowled out defending champions Chennai for paltry 112 in 19.5 overs.
Keiron Pollard (2-15), Lasith Malinga (2-16) and Pragyan Ojha (2-17) took two Chennai wickets each to go with three run-outs.
Asked to bat, Chennai lost wickets at regular intervals and failed to build their innings after losing their three top-order batsmen inside ten overs.
Suresh Raina (36) top-scored for the hosts as he hit a six and two boundaries in his quick-fire 26 balls innings before becoming Ojha's first victim.
Skipper MS Dhoni's run out did not favour Chennai as they lost their last seven wickets for 32 runs in the end.
Pollard dismissed Albie Morkel (3) soon after Ojha's twin-strike. Double-strike by leg-spinner Ojha put Mumbai Indians in front against Chennai in the middle overs. Ojha dismissed Dwayne Bravo (19) in the 12th over to reduce Chennai to 80/4 in 11.2 overs, after he scalped the prized-wicket of Raina (36) in his previous over.
Super Kings lost Murali Vijay (10) and Francois Du Plessis (3) inside six overs. James Franklin dismissed Vijay in the sixth over to reduce Chennai to 38/2 in 5.5 overs. CSK lost opener Du Plessis early in the first over to make a disastrous start to their league campaign.
Earlier, Mumbai skipper Harbhajan Singh won the toss and decided to field against Chennai.
The season's lung opener at the MA Chidambaram stadium could not have got any better as two of the strongest teams in the tournament will set the tone for the high-octane Twenty20 tournament over the next eight weeks.
Banking on their home advantage which enabled them to win back-to-back titles, the Chennai outfit, led by talismanic Mahendra Singh Dhoni, will be hoping for their third consecutive IPL crown, but for that to happen they will have to pull out all stops to ensure a winning start to their campaign as their rivals -- Mumbai Indians -- appear to hold a slender edge.

Sachin Tendulkar in discussion with the management of Mumbai Indians has decided to hand over the responsibilities of captaining Mumbai Indians in Season 2012 of the Indian Premier League to ace off spinner Harbhajan Singh.
Commenting on the decision, Sachin Tendulkar said, “The Mumbai Indians is more than a team. It is like a family to me. At this point of time, I feel I need a break from the responsibility of captaincy of the Mumbai Indians. After due consideration, I discussed my intention to hand over the Captainship of the team to Harbhajan Singh, with Mukeshbhai and Nitabhabhi. I was touched by the graciousness and wholehearted support they offered me while emphasising that they would accept any decision which helps me to continue enjoying the game. Harbhajan will have my wholehearted support as the senior most player in the team. ”
Nita Ambani of Mumbai Indians said, “It was a very difficult moment when Sachin expressed his desire to relinquish the captaincy. This year the opening ceremony of the Indian Premier League is hosted by the Big B of the Bollywood industry, the legend himself – Mr Amitabh Bachchan. The opening ceremony of IPL 2012 will be held in Chennai on the 3rd of April and the series of matches will start from the 4th April. The opening ceremony of this mega event which was much awaited will be held at the YMCA College of Physical Education situated in Chennai. Like rest of the previous seasons of Indian Premier League, this year also people will witness the blend of Hollywood and Bollywood celebrities in the opening ceremony, starting at 7.30 pm in the evening.
Big B commented on Twitter, the social networking site used by most celebrities that it will be a great honor to meet the various teams of IPL and their captains who he had watched only on television. He also stated that he is quite nervous but is also very enthusiastic about hosting the opening ceremony of the Indian Premier League this year. The sixty nine year old superstar was hospitalized for two surgeries in his abdomen last month and was on a break to recover physically. Apart from Big B, other Bollywood celebrities participating in the Indian Premier League’s opening ceremony this season are Kareena Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra and Salman Khan who will be performing in this mind blowing event.

The team captains of all the nine IPL teams will be taking the ‘MCC Spirit of Cricket Pledge’ during the opening ceremony. Former Australian wicketkeeper and explosive opener Adam Gilchrist feels there is a big gulf between Sachin Tendulkar and the rest of the top batsmen, something that makes it almost impossible for anyone to get anywhere near the legend's landmark of 100 international centuries.
Giving example of Ricky Ponting, who has recently retired from the ODI format, Gilchrist said 29 centuries separate Tendulkar from his former skipper.
"That speaks about Tendulkar's greatness -- the gap between him and the rest. He is way ahead. I really doubt that anybody would ever break this record," Gilchirst said.
"If you look at the records, Ponting is the world's best batsmen next to Tendulkar. But his combined tally (of Test and one-day centuries) is 71 (41-30)," he said.
Tendulkar's critics could argue that he has played more matches against countries like Zimbabwe and Bangladesh, he said adding but even 10 centuries were added to Ponting's, he would still be 19 centuries away.
"Tendulkar's record is truly unique, remarkable. He is playing with the same intensity for last 22 years... That shows how big a player Tendulkar is," he said.
Gilchrist, who was part of an invincible side that dominated world cricket winning a hat-trick of World Cups from 1999-2007, said Indians need to be patient in the coming days.
"Rahul Dravid has just retired... Now only VVS Laxman and Tendulkar are playing. It would be a huge boots to fill when Tendulkar goes away. We faced a similar phase. But the fans need to patient," he said.
Gilchrist feels that India have cricketing talent in abundance but the supporters need to be patient.
"Undoubtedly, there is no dearth of talent in India. In fact, it's just the opposite. The fans just need to be patient with the youngsters like Virat Kohli," he said.
With his recent exploits, Kohli proved that he was ready to step up and, the Australian said," To me, he is one of the best players in the world cricket at the moment."
Asked if Kohli could fill in the No. 3 slot left void by Dravid, Gilchrist said: "He is an upcoming player. I don't know his preference. And, I also don't want to form an opinion about him. He has showed that he is very confident against the new ball. He is surely a great player in the making."
The Kings XI coach-cum-captain in the upcoming IPL, Gilchrist disagreed that too much cricket and Twenty20 was the reason for India's routs in the recent overseas series in England and Australia.
India were ill-prepared for the Australia tour against a very professional attack that put pressure on the batsmen, he said.
"Twenty20 is a very exciting concept that requires skill at a high level. It needs a lot of thought and you have to maintain the intensity and pace coupled with the pressure. I'm sure the Test cricket is ultimate," he said.
"The challenge here is for the administrators not to overdo.... If it's well administered, there is room for all the three formats," he said, giving example of the poor scheduling of the one-off T20 against South Africa in Johannesburg on Friday.

Former India captain Sourav Ganguly feels that Sachin Tendulkar's landmark achievement of 100 centuries will never be broken.
Answering to a query from Gulf News on what will be the impact of Tendulkar's historic achievement, Ganguly, who is here to take part in the Emirates Airline Twenty20 tournament tomorrow, said: "It is a colossal achievement, something which I honestly feel nobody can break. I doubt in modern days anybody can play for 23 years. It is a long time with so much cricket — T20, Test and One-day. Getting to that landmark will be something unachievable."
To a query on Rahul Dravid's retirement, he said: "All good things come to an end. He has been a champion player for India. In terms of runs in Test cricket Dravid is just after Tendulkar and that just goes to show how good a player he is. He is 39 and all good things have to come to an end and those will be very big boots to fill."
Ganguly, well-known for his eloquence and his strong views on the game, was at his best while talking about some of the recent debates and issues in the game. When asked what is the quality that he saw in Tendulkar over the years that made him the greatest? Ganguly said: "It is his terrific ability as cricketer. He has gone better and better and adjusted his game to different conditions and different stages of his career. Frankly, he has been blessed with a special ability which everyone is not."
Regarding the raging debate as to whether Tendulkar is now under pressure to retire, Ganguly said: "In India, all these are stories which make one-day headlines and honestly there is no pressure on Tendulkar. He will play till the time he performs and till the time he wants to play. Let us be honest, he has earned that right and when you get to 100 international centuries obviously you have more right than others [to retire when he wants] and he deserves every bit of it."
Success
Ganguly who was one of India's most successful captains candidly admitted that Team India is going through a tough phase. "We were unlucky in the Asia Cup, but there is nothing seriously wrong with the team. They messed up against Bangladesh, but they beat the two strong teams [Sri Lanka and Pakistan]. India played poorly in Australia and England which I am sure they will try and rectify. India will go through a rebuilding phase which has already started. I had finished about two-and-half years ago and Dravid is finished now. I don't see much longer [time] for [VVS] Laxman and then only the big man [Tendulkar] is left. So the re-building phase has already started and we will have to be a bit patient."
However, Ganguly made it a point to express that India is better than Pakistan. "India has got the better of Pakistan in the last 10 to 12 years. It was not the case during [Javed] Miandad's days and when Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis were at their peak. In Sharjah, India used to get clobbered by Pakistan, but things have change over the last 10 years and India has been a better team than Pakistan."
Talking about the future and whether Virat Kohli has the potential to be the next India captain, Ganguly said: "Kohli is a terrific player, but it is too early to say whether he can be the future captain. He is a terrific One-day player and it's still early days [for him] in Test cricket because he has just played about 10 Test matches. I will judge him at the end of 50 Test matches as I believe that it is the yard stick for any cricketer. He has terrific ability and the knock against Pakistan under pressure was outstanding."

Why should Sachin Tendulkar retire: Lata Mangeshkar
Lata Mageshkar is jubilant about Sachin Tendulkar scoring his 100th Test ton but is unhappy about suggestions that he retire from the game.
"Why do we this to the best of our artistes and sportspersons," Lata asked angrily.
"Why do we place so much performance anxiety on them? People think it's been smooth-sailing all the way for me. But I've gone through a rough patch in my career. There was a time when I was ready to quit. I fought back. And so did Sachin," said added.
Sachin scored his 100th ton in Dhaka Friday and Lata derided the pressure that was put on him to achieve the mark.
"It was as if the other 99 hundred runs ceased to matter. I have to say, we as a nation do not respect our greatest treasures. Sachin was going through a rough patch.
"Fortunately, he never gave in to the pressure to score. He continued to go out there and play because he loves the game. I understand that. I too never did what I do because I had to perform. I sang without thinking of how well it would turn out," she said.
"Sadly we steal our sportspersons' confidence by demanding too much from them," she added.
Ever since Sachin has created the new record, a large segment of poeple including Kapil Dev who led India to its victory in the 1983 World Cup, wants him to take retirment.
But Lata flares up at the mention of retirement for Sachin.
"Why should he retire? Who decides to retire a singer or a sportsperson? Sachin will retire when he wants to."
About the clinching the game Friday, Lata said: "I had a preominition that this could be it. I somehow saw the century coming. I wasn't surprised when it happened."
Reminiscing about her long association with Sachin, she added: "I first saw him play at Sharjah. I remember a sandstorm hit the stadium. But Sachin stood his ground. He sat there with his cricket togs on waiting for the storm to pass. In him, I saw the determination to excel that I always admire. I remember a few years ago on Sachin's birthday on April 24 I was invited to his friend Raj Thackeray's home to meet him. A huge cricket fan Lataji's love for the game goes back to her childhood.
"My father Pandit Dinanath Mangeshkar was a cricket fan. I guess I inherited his love for the game. I remember I watched my first live cricket match at the Brabourne Stadium when I was 15. I sat in the the cheapest stalls with a family friend and clapped like crazy.
"Later many of the cricketers like Veenu Mankad, Vijay Hazare and Sunil Gavaskar were family friends. They'd come home for meals. Once just before a big match, I had invited the Indian cricket team home. I had made gajar ka halwa for them. After they won the match, Dilip Vengsarkar came to my building on Peddar Road and shouted up to my flat that the gajar ka hawla had worked."
Lata is very fond of many cricketers "specially Sunil Gavasakar and Sachin".
"Among the international cricketers Gary Sobers was always my favourite. He would be so confident about his performance that he'd be making plans for after the match even before playing," she added.

"Why do we this to the best of our artistes and sportspersons," Lata asked angrily.
"Why do we place so much performance anxiety on them? People think it's been smooth-sailing all the way for me. But I've gone through a rough patch in my career. There was a time when I was ready to quit. I fought back. And so did Sachin," said added.
"It was as if the other 99 hundred runs ceased to matter. I have to say, we as a nation do not respect our greatest treasures. Sachin was going through a rough patch.
"Fortunately, he never gave in to the pressure to score. He continued to go out there and play because he loves the game. I understand that. I too never did what I do because I had to perform. I sang without thinking of how well it would turn out," she said.
"Sadly we steal our sportspersons' confidence by demanding too much from them," she added.
But Lata flares up at the mention of retirement for Sachin.
"Why should he retire? Who decides to retire a singer or a sportsperson? Sachin will retire when he wants to."
About the clinching the game Friday, Lata said: "I had a preominition that this could be it. I somehow saw the century coming. I wasn't surprised when it happened."
Reminiscing about her long association with Sachin, she added: "I first saw him play at Sharjah. I remember a sandstorm hit the stadium. But Sachin stood his ground. He sat there with his cricket togs on waiting for the storm to pass. In him, I saw the determination to excel that I always admire. I remember a few years ago on Sachin's birthday on April 24 I was invited to his friend Raj Thackeray's home to meet him. Sachin Tendulkar was supposed to wake up in the afternoon on Saturday. India had played and lost their Asia Cup match to Bangladesh in a day-night match on Friday and face Pakistan in a do-or-die battle on Sunday. But sticking to his word that he would speak to the posse of Indian media after he got to his milestone, Tendulkar was downstairs right on time. Just a cup of coffee without sugar was surely not enough to help him overcome the mental fatigue after achieving a personal milestone that might never be emulated.

Is this wait compared with (Roger) Federer's wait for French Open?
I don't know obviously what Federer had gone through but I am sure it was tough. I would not compare the 100th 100 with the French Open, rather it would be the World Cup. I had to wait 22 years, and that wait was much longer. It is all about belief, I knew it will come but it is as important that you don't take things for granted and keep working the way you usually do.
There is one thing I can put my hand up and say, that I am 100% sure it is due to my effort and commitment. If these were lacking then there would have been a question mark but in those areas, in my book, I scored a 100 out of 100. Scoring runs and not scoring runs will always be a part of a career, and you can experience that when you have played long enough. I was pretty confident about what I was doing and the technique was right and I had the right people around me and I want to thank them.
Anticipation and pressure...
The anticipation and disappointment on not getting this hundred was way too greater than anything else. I don't know how to explain to you. I wish there was someone to guide me, about how to deal with this. I am not complaining, but it happened for the first time. It has been a tough journey. My family and friends stood right behind me.

Perth I would say (114 in 1992). Something that means a lot to me is the hundred at Chennai (against England) in 2009. That was really, really important to me because of what had happened before that. Yes, the first 100 (at Manchester 119 not out in 1990), Chennai (136 against Pakistan 1999), and Sydney when I scored 241* (in 2004)

The double ton against Bangladesh?
Possibly the funniest incident of my life, took place in that match. I was batting with Anil (Kumble) and while taking a run and passing him, I told him ‘keep an eye out for the second run’. And, while taking the second I saw that the throw was good and I stopped and Anil ran. But the keeper missed and I returned to my crease but because I was going for the second run, Anil kept running and actually twice we ran in the same direction and three times we were about to get out but we did not, and we had a good laugh.

Absolutely, without the physio and masseur life would be difficult, really difficult. I'd like to thank all of them who helped me when I was in desperate need. There are a lot of things which happen outside the field, and that helps you prepare for the match. Whatever happens behind the scenes is never discussed, but they are equally a part of my success.
A knock through tremendous pain?
I have played a lot of innings like that. A specific innings that comes to mind is when I got that double century (against South Africa) at Gwalior. I remember before that game I was lying on the physio's table, getting various treatments and my whole body was in trouble.
All we were discussing was that let us win the series, and then I am going to request the BCCI for a break from the third match because I am completely exhausted, I couldn't even stand on the field. I was that exhausted physically and mentally.
To deal with injuries is not easy, and at my age it becomes even more difficult. That was the case even before I played that game. But I went to the ground and forgot all about that. When you are focused, you are willing to find a path and reach a destination of winning that match. Then after the game I was asked ‘do you remember what you had said before the match?’ It happens to everyone and sometimes you go through that more than others.

It's important they lead a normal childhood and not get surrounded by the media all the time. It’s alright to get that when Arjun is matured enough. But right now, he is madly in love with cricket and with all this attention and pressure it shouldn't be that he starts hating all this.

Recently former Indian captain Kapil Dev insisted Sachin should retire from ODI cricket. I think no one have rights to say that to Sachin. He knows when to retire from the cricket, and he knows his stamina and ability.
He still playing his whole 50 over innings with great energy than younger players. Already he had great pressure on his 100 ton. But people like Kapil Dev are increasing his pressure by saying like this. Pleases be quite my god knows when to retire.

Still in search of his 100th international ton, batting ace Sachin Tendulkar is likely to go for a precautionary MRI scan on Monday, for a hit that he took on the helmet while batting in Sunday's CB series match between India and Australia on Sunday.
A naster bouncer from Brett Lee struck Tendulkar when the latter went for a hook on the final delivery of Lee's second over.
Sachin Tendulkar was struck on the head by a Brett Lee bouncer while batting against Australia.
The ball hit the grill of his helmet and bounced off to mid-on where Xavier Doherty took the catch but the batsman was given not out as umpire Steve Davies was convinced that it hadn't touched Tendulkar's bat.
Tendulkar also left the field for a lengthy period of time during the Australian innings after he was struck on the shin while fielding in the slip region.
